GETTING KIDS' IN THE GAME: A LOOK AT THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIZED SPORT


It’s pretty clear that we believe participating in sports isn’t just important, it’s vital. One year ago now we opened the doors to The Sweat Science, inviting anyone interested to learn how to box. But during the last year, something even better has happened: you created a team where everyone fits, everyone belongs, and everyone is challenged to being the very best version of themselves.  

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for so many people in our community, especially children.

Did you know that one in every three Canadian children can’t participate in organized sport because it’s too expensive? In 2014, CIBC commissioned a study which revealed parents spend an average of $953 per year to get involved in a sport.

That’s a big cost many Canadians can’t afford on their own, which is why we’re going to celebrate our birthday by giving back and starting a new class just for kids. (We’ll tell you all about it below!)

Other than the obvious physical activity benefits, here’s what happens when a child joins a sports team:

//Community

There are so many ways kids could spend their time. Being part of an organized sport, children make new friends and learn how to contribute to a team so everyone wins.

 
//Confidence

Growing up is hard to do!  But when a child finds a sport they enjoy, it naturally builds self-esteem and confidence. Sports challenge us to doing tough stuff, and when we accomplish those challenges, it builds us up and spills over into the rest of our life.  

 
///Culture

In a technology age where so much of children’s time could be spent by themselves on iPads or smart phones, becoming part of a team engages kids in their very own experience sharing and celebrating culture.

NEW KIDS ONLY CLASS

We’re so excited to announce our first ever kids classes starting November 13th. The 10-week boxing program is tailored for kids ages 8 – 15 and will focus on boxing basics. Giving them a platform to develop their skill set in a fun and safe environment, they’ll learn balance, coordination, boxing technique and discipline. We’re floored that becoming part of a team can make such a huge difference for one person, so we’re partnering with KidSport to celebrate our birthday, sport, and the power of a good team.

KidSport started back in 1993, and has helped remove financial barriers that would have otherwise kept over 530,000 kids from getting involved in organized sports. They confidentially provide financial support for registration fees and equipment costs, removing barriers that should never hold a kid back from getting in the game.

THREE WAYS RECOVERING FROM BOXING WITH YOGA WILL CHANGE YOU

Listen up. We know you want to get into the studio and smash that heavy bag with all you’ve got. And we love that about you. But what if we told you that when you skip recovery, you’re actually hindering your potential. 

Recovery is something we don’t talk about enough, even though it is a key component to reaching your fitness goals. Recovery happens after your killer HIT-FIT class, and before you rest (sleep, hydrate, eat well, etc.). See, recovery is what you actively do to help your body maximize the time it takes to repair after a wicked workout. 

We’ve found three major reasons why recovery is just as important as hitting that heavy bag. We’ve listed them here for you to check out before you read about our new Boxing + Yoga class to help you become just as amazing at recovery as you are at boxing.

/YOU’LL LOOK EVEN BETTER

You already look banging, but taking time to intentionally stretch will actually change the way you look. It’s cute if you stretch for two minutes in your bed every morning, but that won’t cut it. See, when you’re boxing, you’re training your muscles to breakdown and adapt to handle an increased workload, building muscle as a result. Smart recovery helps to rebuild those muscles more easily, and can even change your physical appearance quicker. 

 
//YOU’LL FEEL AMAZING

Any kind of physical activity releases that feel good hormone – endorphins. But while you are boxing, your body actually tenses up, and needs recovery to enhance your results. To combat any physiological stress built up in life or during your HIT-FIT class, stretching will release tension, help to resolve any joint pain, and restore your senses mentally.   

 
///YOU’LL REACH YOUR GOALS

When you don’t consider recovery than you’re selling yourself short; even coming short of your goals without intending to. After recovery, your mind is motivated and your body is actually prepared for the next level.

Because we care about your total health and fitness journey, we’ve started a new class at The Sweat Science; Boxing + Yoga. Every Friday, at 5:30 we will have a 60 minute class that will start with 30 minutes of high intensity boxing in our heavy bag studio, followed by 30 minutes of yoga poses that include strength, balance and toning. Of course we’ve got you covered with some ab work and cool down before the class finishes with stretches intentionally designed to help you as a boxer.
